I restore interiors for a living, and here is the industry secret: 90% of cabin ageing comes from five preventable habits. Master these and your interior will look five years younger than your mileage suggests.
1. Condition leather twice a year
Leather dries from UV, heat and body oils, then cracks — and cracked leather cannot be un-cracked, only re-dyed. A pH-balanced clean and condition every six months costs little and prevents the most expensive interior repair there is.
2. Shake the mats weekly
Grit trapped in mats grinds carpet fibres every time you plant your feet. Thirty seconds of shaking weekly, plus a quarterly deep vacuum of the rails and under-seat areas, doubles carpet life.
3. Never use silicone “shine” products
Glossy dashboard sprays attract dust, bake into plastics in the sun and leave knobs slippery. Use a matte interior detailer and microfibre — clean should look factory, not wet.
4. Treat spills the same day
Coffee, milk and juice bond to fibres within days and feed bacteria within weeks. Blot (never rub), use plain water first, and call us if the stain survives 48 hours — early extraction removes what late extraction cannot.
5. Crack a window in summer
Cabin temperatures over 70°C cook leather, warp trim and bake odours into headliners. A sunshade plus slightly cracked windows drops peak heat dramatically — the cheapest interior protection ever invented.
When to book a reset
If the wheel shines, the bolsters look pale or the cabin smells “lived in,” a professional interior restoration resets the clock — and these five habits keep it there.
