Most paint problems start small and end expensive. The difference between a $225 detail and a $650 correction is usually six months of ignoring the early signs. Here are the seven we wish every driver recognised.

1. Water stops beading

When rain sheets flat and dirty instead of beading, your protection is gone and contaminants are bonding directly to clear coat. Time for decon and fresh protection.

2. Paint feels rough after washing

That sandpaper texture is bonded iron, tar and sap. Clay and chemical decon remove it — but leave it a year and it etches permanently.

3. Swirls visible in sunlight

The spider-webbing around reflections means micro-scratches are scattering light. Only machine correction removes them; glazes just rent you gloss for a month.

4. Faded or chalky horizontal panels

Oxidation starts on the bonnet, roof and boot. Caught early, a single-stage correction reverses it (see our Midnight Revival). Ignored, it burns through to a respray.

5. Bird etching that won't wash off

Droppings etch clear coat in hours in summer heat. If a wash and clay won't lift the mark, it needs machine polishing — the sooner the shallower the cut.

6. Rust blooms on light paint

Tiny orange dots are embedded rail and brake dust oxidising. Iron remover dissolves them chemically — scratching at them with a nail makes it worse.

7. Peeling or flaking clear coat

The one sign correction cannot fix. Failed clear needs a body shop. We will tell you honestly when that line is crossed — and refer you to painters we trust.
